If the batteries in your BMW fob are getting worn out you might ask, “Can I change the battery on the BMW key fob?”. The answer depends on the type you own. The older diamond-shaped BMW fobs, like are not made to be used to replace batteries. They are sealed with glue, so trying to pry off the backplate is likely to cause some damage to the fob. However, more recent fobs can have their batteries replaced by simply opening the fob and swapping out the CR2450 or CR2032 battery.
You can remove the valet keys of the most popular smart key models (1, 3, 5 7 and X) by pressing the small tab. Then, you can open the access port by using the help of a screwdriver. This should reveal a small groove. The valet key can be removed by using the tool to pull the tab out and push it out. Replace the old battery with a new one and then put the cover back on.
You’ll need to take a different approach when you own a Display key with touchscreen. The Display Key is water resistant but not waterproof like a standard fob. You must take care to avoid exposing it too much humidity. It can survive a trip through the washing machine but it’s recommended to treat it as it’s a smartphone.
