    Track and Roller Replacement

Tracks and rollers are primary components of sliding door functionality. They are situated at the bottom of a door panel made of aluminum and rest on a track that guides them when they open and close. Over time, dirt could cause the tracks to get blocked and cause the rollers to be damaged. Keep your patio door lubricated and clean to avoid these issues.

It is possible to fix your track and rollers, except if the track is seriously bent. You can ask a friend to assist you in lifting the panel off the track by tilting it toward you (Photo 3). It could take some effort to lift the panel since they are quite heavy. After the panel has been removed, lay it flat on the sawhorses and examine the rollers. Replace them if damaged with a new roller set. You can alter the height of rollers by turning the adjustment screws, which are usually located in slots along the edge of the panel.

If the rollers appear to be good they might just require cleaning and lubricated. Use a screwdriver for removal of the rollers and wipe down each one with denatured alcohol. This will get rid of any grime or dirt that might be causing the resistance. After carefully putting each roller into its slot completely retract it using the adjustment screw. Last but not least spray the rollers with silicone spray. This type of lubricant won’t accumulate dirt like petroleum-based products and will let your door move smoothly.

Dirty rollers caused by debris in the track or a wrinkly screen are common culprits however, you can solve them by following these easy steps.

If your screen is sliding or wrinkled, you must first lay the frame down on an even surface. Then slide a 1×4 block underneath each end to create a slight bow in the middle. This will help pull the screen tighter and straighten it.

Purchase a screen that is at least two inches larger in both directions than the opening of the frame. This will give you the space to trim any excess. Finally make use of a spline roller tool to push the rubber spline’s end into the channel. After you’ve done this, it is time to roll in the rest of your spline.

    Adjusting the Panel

In contrast to traditional sliding doors that open by turning the handle, tilt and slide patio door mechanisms permit you to keep the doors open for ventilation while keeping the kids or pets out of your living space. The doors require more force to open than you would think. Over time it can lead to increased friction and crooked tracks, or misalignments, which can cause the door to not work. A quick detection and minor adjustments can usually solve these issues, and reduce the cost of replacement hardware.

The first step to adjust the tilt and slide patio door is to remove the panel and set it on a flat work surface. After the panels have been removed, use a screwdriver to remove the plastic holes caps from each adjustment roller. Once these are removed, the adjuster can be pulled out of its channel by using a long shaft screwdriver. Once the adjustable roller is removed from its channel, place it on a flat surface and clean it using rubbing alcohol or a stronger version like denatured alcohol. This will eliminate any grime that may be creating resistance and allow the roller to slide easily into its channel when the process is complete.

When reinstalling the moveable panel in its frame and use the drill to drive the screws across the flange. The flange should be secured tightly to the edge of the door and ensure that the flaps are oriented correctly. Once the movable panel is in place, apply a small amount of silicone-based lubricant to the top track arm connector block, the lead Bogie wheel, and the slave Bogie wheel and replace the plastic cap on the hole.

Repeat the process for each of the other two movable panels to restore their slide function. Install the plastic flanges. Finally, glue the jamb side strip to its corresponding fixed panel using a glue made of plastic. When the glue is dry then reattach the handle and test for smooth operation. If there are any issues, you can adjust the lead Bogie wheel again by taking it out of its channel, cleaning it and installing it again with a small amount of silicone-based grease.
