The Formats, Genres and Styles used in Television Shows

Television shows are one of the most diverse types of media because of the many genres and formats that can be presented. Shows that are fictional, such as dramas and comedies are popular in this area. Non-fictional shows, such as documentary, news, or reality televisionare highly popular. Some shows may be topical for instance, like local newscasts, or historical, similar to many documentaries and fictional movies. They may be mostly instructional or educational, or entertaining such as in comedy and game shows.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods movie shows typically feature actors portraying characters from the context of a modern or historical one The program follows their lives and journeys. Television shows before the 1980s usually remained static without narrative arcs and the characters and premise changed little. If any changes happened to the characters’ lives during the episode, they were usually undone at the end. This is why episodes could be broadcast with any sequence. Since the 1980s the majority of films contain progressive changes in the plot, the characters, or both. Hill Street Blues and St. Elsewhere were the first American prime-time dramas on television to have this kind of dramatized structure. The later film Babylon 5 further exemplifies such structure because it had an established storyline that ran over its intended five-season time period.

In 2012, television became an important part of major media companies earnings than film. Additionally, some people noticed the improvement in the quality of certain TV shows. Academy-Award-winning film director Steven Soderbergh commented on ambiguity and complexity of character and narrative, stating, “I think those qualities are now being seen on television and that people who want to see stories that have those kinds of qualities are watching television.”

The most commonly used terms for the field generally include the big screen, the silver screen, films, and cinema. The last one is commonly employed as an overarching phrase in scholarly texts and critical writing. In the early years, the word “sheet” was sometimes employed instead of “screen.” Film, as a general term, is not the best term to refer to the length of a commercial video production because it’s vague in general and thus requires context for correct interpretation.

The development of European cinema was interrupted by the beginning of World War I, while the film industry in the United States flourished with the development of Hollywood and was most notably exemplified by the pioneering works of D. W. Griffith in The Birth of a Nation (1915) and Intolerance (1916). In the 1920s, European filmmakers such as Eisenstein, F. W. Murnau, and Fritz Lang
